Ian Desmond, Josh Willingham and Adam Dunn hit solo homers to help the Washington Nationals to a 6-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday.
Willingham homered in the second for Washington’s first run and the Nationals made it 2-1 later in the inning on Desmond’s RBI single. Atlanta’s Jason Heyward tied it in the fifth with his solo homer off Washington starter Livan Hernandez.
But Desmond broke the tie in the fifth with a solo shot off Kenshin Kawakami (0-5). Dunn hit a moon shot to right for a 4-2 lead in the sixth before Washington added solo runs in the ensuing two frames.
The Braves made it interesting in the ninth when Chipper Jones notched a one-out RBI single, but Matt Capps came on for the final two outs to record his 11th save.
Hernandez (4-1) got the victory but needed 123 pitches to get through 5 1/3 innings as he walked five and struck out one while allowing two runs -- one earned.
Atlanta’s offense again sputtered at the wrong times. The Braves missed on several chances, going 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and leaving 11 on base in snapping a three-game win streak.
