Adrian Gonzalez and Chase Headley both hit home runs and Jon Garland tossed six effective innings to lead the San Diego Padres to a 12-1 thumping of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday.

Scott Hairston added three RBIs for the Padres, who got off to a strong start in their first game since the All-Star break.

Gonzalez hit a two-run shot, his 19th of the season, to highlight San Diego's five-run fourth inning. Headley added a solo shot in the fifth and Hairston plated Gonzalez and Headley with a double in the seventh to extend the lead to 8-1.

Headley finished with three hits and four runs scored while Gonzalez scored three times.

Garland (9-6) was the beneficiary of all the offense and picked up the win. He allowed just one run and three hits while striking out five and yielding two walks.

Dan Haren (7-8) was tagged with the loss after surrendering six runs and eight hits in five innings. He struck out eight and walked just one but allowed both San Diego homers.
