Brian McCann hit a pinch-hit, tiebreaking double in the top of the ninth inning to help the Atlanta Braves to an 11-7 victory over the host Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday afternoon.
McCann’s one-out double scored Brooks Conrad, who narrowly beat the throw home from Arizona right fielder Justin Upton. The Braves received RBI singles from Jason Heyward and Eric Hinske and a sacrifice fly from Troy Glaus later in the inning.
Kelly Johnson hit a three-run double in the eighth to tie the score as Arizona rebounded from a five-run deficit.
Atlanta led 7-2 before Chris Young led off the Arizona seventh with a homer. The Braves built the big lead by scoring five runs in the fifth.
David Ross doubled in the first run and pitcher Tommy Hanson singled home the next two. The other runs scored on Heyward’s single and a bases-loaded walk to Chipper Jones.
Arizona loaded the bases in the bottom of ninth but Chris Snyder struck out against Atlanta’s Billy Wagner.
Hanson struck out 10 in 5 1/3 innings, allowing just two runs and four hits before reliever Peter Moylan (3-1) got the win.
Chad Qualls (1-3) suffered the loss for the Diamondbacks.
