The San Francisco Giants put together their second consecutive pitching gem in beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 12-1 at AT&T Park on Saturday.
A day after Matt Cain spun a one-hitter against the deteriorating Diamondbacks, Jonathan Sanchez and three relievers combined on a two-hitter in handing Arizona its sixth straight loss.
Sanchez (3-4) went just five innings because of a high pitch count, but still got the win after allowing just one earned – a Rusty Ryal solo shot – on two hits with four walks and seven strikeouts.
Sergio Romo, Denny Bautista and Dan Runzler combined to throw four hitless innings to win the second game of the series.
Top-prospect Buster Posey was called up for the game and didn’t disappoint as he pounded out three hits and drove in three runs while playing first base.
Juan Uribe and Pablo Sandoval had three hits and three runs scored each with the early damage coming against Billy Buckner (0-3). The right-hander didn’t record an out in the fifth inning as he allowed seven earned runs on nine hits and three walks in four innings. He struck out five.
The Diamondbacks are now 20-30 on the season and have started 0-5 on a nine-game road trip against National League West opponents.
