Cesar Valdez picked up the win his first start to help the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 9-1 victory over the Houston Astros on Monday.
Chris Synder went 3-for-3 with a pair of walks and a three-run homer and Chris Young had three hits and three RBIs as Arizona snapped a three-game losing streak
Valdez (1-0) went five innings, allowing five hits and one earned run with three walks and two strikeouts. The right-hander, who was called-up from Triple-A earlier in the day, gave up a first inning run on a RBI double from Carlos Lee, but settled down thereafter.
Arizona tied things in the second and surged ahead with three more in the fourth as Snyder took Felipe Paulino deep.
Paulino (0-4) was tagged for four runs on five hits while striking out eight in six innings to remain winless.
Justin Upton, Mark Reynolds and Adam LaRoche each drove in runs in the eighth inning to extend the advantage.
