Kevin Correia tossed 5 2/3 shutout innings to lead the San Diego Padres to a 5-0 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday.
Correia (2-1), coming off a career year in which he won 12 games, held the Diamondbacks to three hits, two walks with eight strikeouts to ensure the Padres of their first winning series on the year.
San Diego loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning, but managed just one run on a double-play groundout for the early lead.
The Padres pushed it 2-0 in the fourth on Nick Hundley’s first home run of the season and then put it out of reach in the seventh with three runs, including a two-run single by Hundley.
The Diamondbacks received a solid start out of fifth starter Kris Benson (0-1), who has pitched less than 22 major-league innings since the 2006 season because of shoulder injuries. Benson allowed two earned runs on six hits with four walks in six innings.
The Diamondbacks went a span of 21 straight at-bats without reaching base before a two-out double in the ninth inning by Kelly Johnson.
