Carlos Pena belted two home runs and Jeff Niemann went the distance on a two-hitter as the Tampa Bay Rays walloped the Toronto Blue Jays 9-0 Tuesday night.
Pena came into the game mired in a 7-for-55 slump, but broke out in tonight’s game. He led off the scoring with a solo shot off losing pitcher Brian Tallet (1-2) in the bottom of the fourth. One inning later he hit his seventh career grand slam off reliever Rommie Lewis to put the game away.
Willy Aybar and Evan Longoria had two RBIs apiece for the Rays, who beat Toronto for the third straight time. B.J. Upton batted ninth on Sunday but was inserted back into the leadoff spot tonight. He added a pair of hits and scored twice.
The outburst made an easy winner out of Niemann (6-0), who returned to form after struggling in his previous start in Toronto last week. Niemann limited the league's most powerful offence to a pair of singles, walking one and striking out six.
Tallet was roughed up, surrendering five runs on six hits in four innings. It was a far cry from his previous outing, when he threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings in a 7-6 loss to Tampa.
