Marlon Byrd singled home Alfonso Soriano in the top of the 13th inning and the Chicago Cubs snapped Seattle’s six-game winning streak with a 3-2 victory over the Mariners on Thursday.
On Byrd’s hit off reliever Sean White, Soriano raced around from second while Ichiro Suzuki’s throw home was off target. Greg Olson (0-2) was charged with the loss.
John Grabow (1-3) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief. Tom Gorzelanny earned his first save by getting the final out as the Cubs salvaged the final game of the three-game series.
The Mariners had 11 hits, including three doubles, but they left the bases loaded in the ninth and 10th innings and stranded 13 men on base.
Felix Hernandez pitched nine innings, allowing five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. It was the second consecutive outing Hernandez went nine innings, but he ended up with a no-decision in this one.
Cub starter Ted Lilly allowed one run on five hits in six innings, striking out six and walking none.
Chad Tracy’s RBI single in the seventh gave the Cubs a 2-1 lead. The Mariners answered in the bottom of the seventh when shortstop Jack Wilson hit a ground-rule double to score Josh Wilson.
