Jason Vargas was dominant pitching into the eighth inning and Chone Figgins had the go-ahead RBI single to carry the Seattle Mariners to a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday.
Ichiro Suzuki had two hits and Ryan Langerhans drove in a run as the Mariners avoided the three-game interleague sweep.
Vargas (5-2) allowed just one run on five hits over 7 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old struck out four and issued no walks in outdueling Jaime Garcia.
David Aardsma allowed Ryan Ludwick to reach with a one-out double in the ninth as the tying run, but retired the final two batters to earn the save.
Garcia (6-3) surrendered two runs on five hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings to take the hard-luck loss.
Figgins broke a deadlock with a single to center in the fifth.
After Langerhans brought in a run in the fourth, Ludwick tied it at 1-1 in the bottom half with a sacrifice that scored Albert Pujols.
