Kurt Suzuki singled in the winning run with two out in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Oakland Athletics earned a 6-5 victory and two-game series sweep of the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.
Suzuki hit a sharp single to center off Brandon League (3-4), scoring Cliff Pennington. Pennington had walked, moved to second on a sacrifice fly and took third on League’s wild pitch.
Craig Breslow (1-1) was the fifth Oakland pitcher in the game. He earned the win by putting the Mariners down in order in the 10th.
The Mariners have lost four in a row and are 0-5 in extra-inning games.
Seattle tied the score at 5-5 in the eighth on pinch-hitter Mike Sweeney’s sacrifice fly to center.
Mariners starter Felix Hernandez allowed 11 hits in six innings, but was able to limit the damage on the scoreboard to only three runs.
Seattle catcher Rob Johnson homered in the third off Ben Sheets. He had homered against Sheets in his first at-bat of the season and had not hit a home run again until then.
Sheets finished the night going 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks. He struck out five.
Oakland’s Ryan Sweeney went 4-for-5 with two runs scored.
