Tampa Bay’s Reid Brignac led off the bottom of the 11th inning with a walk-off home run to lead the Rays to a 1-0 win over the New York Yankees at Tropicana Field Monday night.
Brignac greeted reliever Sergio Mitre (0-3) with his seventh homer of the season to boost the Rays into first place in the AL East by one-half game over the Yankees, who have lost four straight.
Tampa Bay’s David Price and New York’s CC Sabathia hooked up in a classic pitcher’s duel. The two front-runners for the AL Cy Young award kept the game scoreless before leaving after eight innings.
Price allowed just three hits and two walks. He struck out four and lowered his ERA to 2.75. Sabathia was just as good. He allowed two hits and two walks while striking out nine.
Both starters got out of trouble in the eighth inning as teams put runners in scoring position. Price got Nick Swisher to ground out to third to end the inning while Sabathia struck out B.J. Upton for the second out of the eighth and then got Jason Bartlett to ground out to shortstop to the Rays’ threat.
Grant Balfour (2-1) earned the win.
Carl Crawford, who struck out three times in the game, was thrown out of the game for arguing a strike call in the ninth inning. Ironically it was Brignac who took his spot and homered in his next at bat.
