Marcus Thames singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning to lead the New York Yankees to a come-from-behind 7-6 win over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night.
Down 6-5 entering the ninth, the Yankees rallied against Tuesday's winning pitcher Neftali Feliz (3-3). Lance Berkman drew a walk to open the frame and was pulled for pinch-runner Curtis Granderson, who advanced on a Brett Gardner single.
Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and Derek Jeter tied the game with a sharp single to center field. After Nick Swisher struck out, Thames responded with his third hit of the night to score Gardner with the eventual winning run.
Kerry Wood (2-4) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief while Mariano Rivera survived a leadoff triple by Elvis Andrus to record his 24th save.
The Rangers scored five unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth frames to turn a 1-1 tie into a 6-1 advantage. Mitch Moreland had the go-ahead two-run single in the fourth, and David Murphy followed a Josh Hamilton RBI single in the fifth with a single to center that brought home Hamilton and Michael Young.
The Yankees chipped away at the lead, eventually pulling within one on a Thames solo home run in the eighth inning.
Texas starter Cliff Lee worked 6 1/3 innings, charged with four runs on eight hits with 11 strikeouts. Yankees counterpart Javier Vazquez lasted just four innings, surrendering six runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out one.
