Arizona pitcher Dan Haren tried to beat the Yankees all by himself, but fell short as the Diamondbacks lost to New York 9-3 Tuesday night.

Haren (7-6) tossed seven strong innings, allowing three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts. He also accounted for the entire Arizona offense with his two-RBI single in the second inning.

He fell behind early after giving up a two-run homer to Alex Rodriguez in the first inning. He tied the game in the second before Rodriguez hit a single in the third that put the Yankees ahead 3-2.

The scoreboard remained untouched until the eighth inning when the Diamondbacks bullpen entered the game and promptly imploded.

Esmerling Vazquez gave up four hits and a walk without recording an out, giving up RBI singles to Mark Teixeira and Robinson Cano to make it 5-2. Chad Qualls then came on next with the bases loaded and nobody out. A Jorge Posada sacrifice fly made it 6-2 and Curtis Granderson followed with another RBI single to extend the bulge to 7-2.

Pinch-hitter Colin Curtis put the nail in the coffin with a two-run double to cap off a six-run inning. The double was Curtis’ first career major league hit.

Arizona’s bullpen was credited with five runs in that frame. The Diamondbacks added a meaningless run in the ninth and have been outscored 103-58 in the eighth and ninth innings this season.

Andy Pettitte was on the mound for New York to earn the win. He allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks in seven innings. He struck out seven and improved his record to 9-2.

Haren went 2-for-2 in the game for Arizona. He now has his second six-game hit streak of the season and is batting 19-for-42 (.452) on the season.
