Andy Pettitte pitched 7 1/3 strong innings against his former team and Francisco Cervelli drove in two runs as the New York Yankees edged the Houston Astros 4-3 on Friday.
Nick Swisher and Mark Teixeira added an RBI apiece for the Yankees, who kicked off a nine-game interleague home stand on Friday.
Pettitte spent three seasons with his hometown Astros from 2004-2006 and allowed three runs - two earned - on just four hits while striking out four to push his record to 8-1. The Texas native picked up his 200th win with New York and has now allowed two earned runs or less in four straight games.
The Yankees jumped on the board with three runs in the first inning off Houston right-hander Brett Myers (4-4). Curtis Granderson sparked the rally with a one-out double and came in to score when Swisher drew a bases-loaded walk. Cervelli followed two batters later with a two-run single.
The Astros grabbed two in the second on Tommy Manzella’s double but couldn’t get much closer as Teixeira tacked on another run with an RBI single in the fifth.
Joba Chamberlain got the final two outs in the eighth and Mariano Rivera tossed a perfect ninth for his 15th save of the season.
