Jason Bay had four hits and scored three times as the New York Mets finally ended their recent futility against the cross-town Yankees with a 5-3 win Saturday.
The Mets (21-23) beat the Yankees (26-17) for the first time in six meetings dating back to last season. The Bronx Bombers had outscored the Mets 35-4 during the streak, but struggled against starter Mike Pelfrey (6-1).
Bay’s four-hit effort equaled a career high, and he added a stolen base. Angel Pagan went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while David Wright had two hits and drove in a pair.
Pelfrey kept the Yankees off-balance over his six innings of work, allowing six hits while walking two and striking out five. Francisco Rodriguez recorded the final five outs for his seventh save.
The middle of the Yankees order did the bulk of the damage in defeat, with Alex Rodriguez, Robinson Cano and Nick Swisher combining for seven hits. Cano scored twice, while Francisco Cervelli added two hits and an RBI.
Phil Hughes (5-1) absorbed the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out seven.
