Javier Vazquez had his first solid start of the season and the New York Yankees secured a 7-3 victory over the host Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night.
Vazquez (1-2) allowed three runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings in New York’s fifth win in a row.
The Yankees scored three runs in the first on Jorge Posada’s run-scoring single off Gio Gonzalez (1-1) and Nick Swisher’s two-run single.
New York’s lead increased to 6-0 in the top of the fifth on Alex Rodriguez’s three-run homer.
Oakland got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on Travis Buck’s first homer of the season. Kurt Suzuki hit a two-run blast in the sixth to pull the A’s within 6-3.
The game was delayed for 13 minutes in the bottom of the sixth inning after home plate umpire Ed Rapuano took a foul ball in the chin and was unable to continue. Second-base umpire Ron Kupla took over behind the plate.
