The Los Angeles Angels took advantage of wildness by the Oakland bullpen in the seventh inning to rally for a 6-5 victory over the Athletics on Monday night.
The Angels entered the bottom of the seventh trailing 4-3 when what looked to be a routine inning quickly got away from the Athletics, who used four pitchers in the frame.
Loser Brad Ziegler (3-6) walked Alberto Callaspo. Pinch-hitter Hideki Matsui tied the score at 4 with an RBI single off Justin James. James walked Maicer Izturis to load the bases and then hit Erick Aybar with a pitch, scoring Reggie Willits. James then walked pinch-hitter Hank Conger, scoring pinch-runner Mark Trumbo, and the Angels led 6-4.
Kurt Suzuki, who had two RBIs, tripled in the eighth to close the gap to 6-5, but that was as close as Oakland would come.
Michael Kohn (2-0) earned the win with one inning of relief. Fernando Rodney allowed two runners to reach in the ninth before getting his 13th save.
With game-time temperatures in the mid-90s, Oakland jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
Suzuki hit a sacrifice fly in the first. Jeremy Hermida hit his sixth homer in the second and Mark Ellis followed later in the inning with an RBI single.
The Angels quickly tied the score in the third. Izturis singled in a run, Aybar reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Mike Napoli, and Howie Kendrick singled in Izturis to tie the score.
Jack Cust gave Oakland a 4-3 lead in the fourth with a single, scoring Ellis, who had doubled.
Oakland starter Brett Anderson allowed three runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. Los Angeles counterpart Ervin Santana allowed four runs on 10 hits in six innings. He had six strikeouts and walked three.
