Trevor Cahill pitched eight splendid innings to lead the Oakland Athletics to a 6-1 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Angels on Thursday afternoon.
Cahill (5-2) gave up one run and six hits and struck out four to help the Athletics gain a split of the four-game series. Andrew Bailey finished it up by pitching the ninth.
Ryan Sweeney scored three runs and Daric Barton scored twice for Oakland.
Sweeney doubled in Barton in the fourth inning for the Athletics’ first run and then scored on a single by Gabe Gross.
The Angels scored their lone run in the fifth on Bobby Wilson’s single and Oakland responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Barton singled home Cliff Pennington, Kurt Suzuki singled in Barton and Kevin Kouzmanoff’s run-scoring single knocked in Sweeney.
Jack Cust hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh for Oakland’s final run.
Ervin Santana (6-4) took the loss by allowing five runs – four earned – and seven hits in five innings.
