The Yankees (5-2) celebrated their 2009 championship with a 7-5 victory over the Angels (2-6) in Tuesday's home opener at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
Andy Pettitte (1-0, 0.75 ERA) continued his stellar pitching with six shutout innings for the win. He allowed five hits and three walks and struck out six.
Nick Johnson (2-for-3, HR, 3 runs) and Derek Jeter (2-for-5, HR, 2 RBIs) hit solo home runs off Angels starter Ervin Santana in the first and third innings to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead. Jeter picked up another RBI with an infield single in the fourth and an Alex Rodriguez (2-for-5, 2 RBIs) single in the sixth scored two more runs to give the Yankees a 5-0 lead.
Kendry Morales (3-for-4, HR) got the Angels on the board with a solo home run in the eighth. The Yankees tacked on two in the bottom half on an RBI double by Jorge Posada (3-for-4, RBI) and an RBI single by Curtis Granderson.
Former Yankee Bobby Abreu hit a grand slam to right-center field off David Robertson in the ninth inning to make it 7-5, but Mariano Rivera came in to close the door after that. Rivera got his third save of the year.
Santana (0-2, 6.94 ERA) did not fare well on a day when six Yankees hitters notched two or more hits. He went 5 2/3 innings, and gave up five earned runs on eight hits for his second loss.
