Curtis Granderson homered twice and Derek Jeter had three hits as the New York Yankees topped the Kansas City Royals 12-6 on Sunday in a contest that included a rain delay of more than two hours.

Phil Hughes (12-3) went 5 1/3 innings for the win and Alex Rodriguez drove in three for the Yankees, who finished up their nine-game homestand with six wins.

The Royals grabbed the early lead on Scott Podsednik’s two-run homer in the third, but New York battled back immediately in the bottom of the frame, pushing across four runs against Sean O’Sullivan (1-1). Granderson got it started with a solo blast and then Jeter, Mark Teixeira and Rodriguez added RBI hits.

Rick Ankiel cut it to 4-3 with a solo shot in the fourth, but Granderson got that run back in the Yankees’ turn with his second round-tripper of the game and ninth homer of the season.

With rain pouring down and thunderstorms on the way, Hughes struck out Wilson Betemit for the first out in the sixth before the tarp was pulled out.

New York piled on when play resumed but got a scare in the eighth when Rodriguez, who was attempting to hit his 600th career home run, was hit in the left arm with the bases loaded and removed from the game.
