Jose Guillen homered and Rick Ankiel drove in a pair of runs as the Kansas City Royals downed the New York Yankees, 7-4, on Saturday.
Scott Podsednik added three hits and an RBI and Billy Butler singled in a run for the Royals, who matched their biggest run-scoring outburst of the month.
Kansas City jumped out to a big lead early, grabbing two runs in the first, one in the third and three in the fourth on Ankiel’s two-run double and Podsednik’s RBI single. All of that damage came off Sergio Mitre (0-2), who was starting in place of the injured Andy Pettitte.
Guillen finally chased Mitre with a solo blast in the fifth, his 16th homer of the season.
The Yankees attempted to mount a comeback with their powerful offense, chipping away with a pair of solo homers in the fourth by Mark Teixeira and Jorge Posada. Teixeira added a two-run blast in the fifth off Kyle Davies (5-6) to cut it to a three-run deficit, but New York could not solve the Royals bullpen.
Alex Rodriguez failed to hit his 600th homer in the contest, going 1-for-4 with a single.
Two relievers bridged the gap to Joakim Soria, who pitched a scoreless ninth for his 27th save.
