Yuniesky Betancourt and Scott Podsednik drove in runs in the top of the 10th inning to rally the Kansas City Royals to a 6-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Monday night.
Mitch Maier tripled in the 10th off Chad Cordero (0-1) and scored on Betancourt’s single. Betancourt went to second on a wild pitch and came home on Podsednik’s single.
Kyle Farnsworth (2-0) earned the victory with an inning of spotless relief and Joakim Soria recorded his 23rd save.
Seattle starter Felix Hernandez was bidding for his fourth consecutive win and left after seven innings with a 4-2 lead, allowing six hits and striking out six.
But Kansas City tied the score at 4-4 with two runs in the eighth on four hits and a sacrifice fly against Brandon League. Billy Butler finished with a pair of RBIs and Alberto Callaspo drove in a run for the Royals.
The Mariners loaded the bases in the eighth inning, but Jack Wilson popped out to end the threat.
Seattle took a 4-1 lead in the fifth as Russell Branyan, in his first home game since being reacquired by the Mariners on June 26, hit a two-run homer to right off starter Brian Bannister.
