Rookie Jeremy Hellickson allowed just three hits over seven scoreless innings to lift the Tampa Bay Rays to an 8-0 win over the Detroit Tigers Tuesday night at Comerica Park.
Hellickson (2-0) was making his second major league start in place of Wade Davis, who was put on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain before the game.
Hellickson didn’t walk a batter and struck out seven. He also won his first major league start a week ago allowing just two runs in seven innings.
The Rays got on the board in the fifth on an RBI double by Jason Bartlett, who had three hits.
They made it 2-0 in the seventh as Dan Johnson walked to lead off the inning and moved to third on a pair of groundouts. Johnson then scored on a wild pitch by Max Scherzer.
Scherzer (7-9) allowed four hits and just one earned run to take the loss. The Tiger bullpen was then tagged for six runs in two innings.
Tampa Bay made it 3-0 in the eighth inning on Evan Longoria RBI double. The Rays then opened it up in the ninth inning, scoring five runs aided by five walks, three of them with the bases loaded.
