Max Scherzer threw seven scoreless innings and Gerald Laird homered as the Detroit Tigers snapped a seven-game skid with a 4-1 victory over the Texas Rangers on Wednesday.

Magglio Ordonez and Miguel Cabrera each drove in a run for the Tigers, who won for the first time since the All-Star break.

Scherzer (7-7) helped Detroit end its woes by limiting the potent Rangers’ offense to four hits. The right-hander struck out five and walked three while throwing 75 of a season-high 123 pitches for strikes and leaving with a 2-0 lead.

Detroit added some insurance runs in the bottom half of the seventh. Ordonez had an RBI single and Cabrera notched his major league-best 83 RBI with a sacrifice fly later in the frame.

Phil Coke worked the eighth and Jose Valverde made things interesting in the ninth before closing it out.

Laird put Scherzer and the Tigers ahead 2-0 with a two-run shot off Colby Lewis (9-6) in second. Lewis, who had won five of his previous seven starts, allowed four runs and nine hits in seven innings.

Josh Hamilton drove in the lone run for the Rangers, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. Hamilton's RBI single in the ninth helped Texas avoid being shutout for just the second time this season.
