Rookie Brennan Boesch homered and drove in three runs to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 10-4 rout of the Atlanta Braves Sunday.
Austin Jackson went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and three Tigers drove in at least two runs as Detroit avoided being swept by pounding out 17 hits and chasing Tommy Hanson (7-5) with a five-run fourth inning.
Justin Verlander (9-5) battled through seven innings to pick up the win. He allowed four runs and six hits with six strikeouts and a pair of walks.
He got all the support he needed early. The first seven batters reached in the fourth against Hanson, who was knocked around for a second straight start. Boesch, Don Kelly and Gerald Laird each had RBI singles before Jackson’s two-run single capped the outburst and gave the Tigers a 6-0 lead.
Hanson allowed six runs – five earned - and eight hits, while lasting just 3 2/3 innings for the second time in five days. He was roughed up for a career high nine runs and 13 hits by the Chicago White Sox last Tuesday.
Boesch’s 12th homer of the season – a two-run shot in the fifth - made it 8-2. Detroit tacked on two more runs in the sixth.
Melky Cabrera, Eric Hinske, Brian McCann and Troy Glaus all drove in a run for Atlanta, which had its seven-game home winning streak snapped.
