The Detroit Tigers did not get their offense going until late but it was enough to knock off the Pittsburgh Pirates as Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning to lead the Tigers to a 4-3 victory on Sunday and complete a sweep of their three-game interleague series.
Detroit broke through for its first run in the seventh inning on a solo homer by Alex Avila to make it 2-1. Cabrera then connected in the next frame for his 19th homer of the season off of Pirates reliever Octavio Dotel.
Brad Thomas (4-0) recorded the final out of the eighth to pick up the win. Detroit starter Armando Galarraga allowed two runs and six hits in 7 2/3 innings of work.
Jose Valverde surrendered a run in the ninth but still earned his 13th save of the season.
Javier Lopez (1-1) took the loss, allowing a walk and a run without retiring a batter.
Garrett Jones accounted for both Pittsburgh runs with a solo homer in the second and an RBI double in the fourth as Pittsburgh has now lost a season-high eight straight games.
