Trevor Cahill outdueled Justin Verlander and Daric Barton drove in a run and scored a run as the Oakland Athletics topped the Detroit Tigers, 4-1, on Monday.
Kevin Kouzmanoff added an RBI and Rajai Davis scored a run for the A’s, who took three of four from the Tigers and have taken eight of 10 overall to move into first place in the American League West.
Cahill (4-2) moved to 4-1 with a 1.96 ERA in his last six starts by allowing one run on five hits in 6 1/3 innings on Monday. The right-hander walked four and struck out three against the Tigers.
Oakland pushed across two runs against Verlander in the first, with Barton doubling in Davis after a leadoff single and moving to third on Ryan Sweeney’s single. Barton came in to score when Kurt Suzuki grounded into a double play.
The A’s tacked on insurance runs in the seventh and eighth on RBIs by Kouzmanoff and Sweeney.
Verlander (5-4) lasted seven innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking one. The ace right-hander has lost his last two starts after winning four in a row to start the month.
