Phil Hughes pitched seven shutout innings in leading the New York Yankees to an 8-0 win over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday in the second game of a day-night doubleheader.

Mark Teixeira had a pair of hits and drove in three runs and Alex Rodriguez had two RBIs for the Yankees, who suffered a 2-0 defeat in the day game.

Hughes (5-0) held the Tigers to five hits, struck out eight and walked one to remain unblemished on the season.

The Yankees scored six runs in the ninth to blow it wide open. Francisco Cervelli and Brett Gardner had RBI singles before Teixeira's two-run single. Rodriguez followed with an RBI double.

Detroit starter Jeremy Bonderman (1-2) gave up two runs on five hits in seven innings.

Rodriguez singled in a run in the first and Teixeira drove in his first run with a third-inning single for the 2-0 lead.
