The Texas Rangers gave their Nos. 1 and 2 hitters a day off, but they did just fine, cruising to a 12-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night.
With Elvis Andrus and Michael Young on the bench, Texas’ backups did quite the job in giving the Rangers just their second win in their last six games.
But the game was overshadowed by a scary incident that happened in the fifth inning. A male spectator, described as a middle-aged white male, fell from the club level of Rangers Ballpark in Arlington and into the lower-level seats, as he lost his balance trying to catch a foul ball from Nelson Cruz.
The Rangers said the fan fell from section 235, an estimated 30-foot drop. The spectator was transported to a Fort Worth hospital. His injuries were unknown, but the team said he was able to move all extremities and was responsive to paramedics. The game was delayed for 16 minutes.
Josh Hamilton had a solo home run and Andres Blanco ripped a two-run double to put the Rangers up 3-1 before the fan incident and Texas picked up where they left off on offense after the worrisome delay.
The Rangers scored five runs in the sixth, highlighted by a three-run double from Joaquin Arias and a two-run homer from Vladimir Guerrero.
Texas extended its lead to 11-1 in the seventh with a solo home run from Nelson Cruz and RBI singles from Arias and Ian Kinsler. David Murphy added a solo home run in the eighth inning.
Cleveland scored its lone run on a solo shot from Jayson Nix in the first inning.
Cleveland starter Justin Masterson (3-8) took the loss, while Texas starter C.J. Wilson (7-4) picked up the victory.
