Fausto Carmona tied a season-high with seven strikeouts and rookie catcher Carlos Santana reached base four times in the Cleveland Indians’ 4-3 win over Pittsburgh on Friday, sending the Pirates to their 12th straight loss.
Santana walked twice, singled and doubled while driving in his fifth run in seven games since being recalled from Triple-A Columbus.
Carmona (6-5) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings to win his second-straight start and Kerry Wood pitched a perfect ninth for his first save since June 5. Wood, who has now gone three straight appearances without allowing a run, lowered his ERA to 7.42.
Ryan Church accounted for all of Pittsburgh’s runs in the seventh with a bases-loaded double off Carmona, who until then had a shutout. He was pulled in the seventh without retiring a batter.
Pirates starter Paul Maholm (4-5) was charged with four runs in 6 2/3 innings, losing for the first time since May 20.
