The Kansas City Royals hoped a return home would change their fortune.
They were wrong.
The Royals (11-22) dropped the opener of a three-game set against the Cleveland Indians 8-2 Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium.
Kansas City is fresh off a season-long 11-game road streak, which it went 3-8 during that stretch.
Russell Branyan opened the scoring for Cleveland (12-18) with a two-run homer in the second inning off of Royals starter Brian Bannister (1-3).
Kansas City countered with a run of their own in the third on a single by Billy Butler, but Cleveland extended their lead in the fourth. Jhonny Peralta’s two-run double broke a personal 0-for-12 slide and increased the lead to 4-1.
The Indians tacked on three more runs in the seventh to blow it open.
The eight runs were more than enough for Cleveland starter Jake Westbrook. He gave up just one run on 5 hits and walked two in six strong innings.
Westbrook’s effort earned him his first win since April 2008, improving his record this year to 1-2.
Kansas City did have opportunities to score. They had a runner in scoring position in each of the first four innings, yet only mustered one run.
The Royals have now lost six straight.
The teams will continue the series Wednesday night.
