Kurt Suzuki had three RBIs and the Oakland Athletics used a four-run second inning to defeat the Chicago White Sox 6-4 on Sunday.
Chicago opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI double by Paul Konerko, but the Athletics came back with a crooked number the next frame.
Daric Barton hit a two-run single to give Oakland a 2-1 lead. After a wild pitch Suzuki also singled in two more to extend the lead to 4-1.
The Oakland catcher collected his third RBI of the game in the fourth on another RBI single and Coco Crisp plated the Athletics’ sixth run on a throwing error by pitcher Erick Threets.
The run support was enough to make a winner out of starter Dallas Braden. Braden (5-7) went 6 1/3 innings, yielding five hits, two walks and three runs. He struck out five.
Michael Wuertz worked a perfect ninth for his third save of the year.
Chicago made it interesting by scoring three in the seventh on consecutive singles by Juan Pierre, Alexei Ramirez and Alex Rios, but the Sox couldn’t get any closer.
As a result of the failed comeback the White Sox couldn’t get rookie starter Daniel Hudson off the hook for the loss. Hudson (1-1) was responsible for all five runs, surrendering six hits and four walks with four strikeouts in five innings as Oakland took two of three games in the series.
