Franklin Gutierrez hit a two-run single in the bottom of the 11th inning as the Seattle Mariners avoided a three-game sweep with a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night.
Gutierrez’s knock off Bobby Jenks (1-3) plated Jack Wilson and Chone Figgins and gave the Mariners just their fourth victory in July.
The contest was scoreless until Omar Vizquel gave Chicago a 1-0 lead in the top of the 11th with a single off Brandon League (7-6), who picked up the win.
Both starters were fantastic in this one despite taking no-decisions.
Felix Hernandez allowed just two singles - by Paul Konerko in the second and Gordon Beckham in the third - over eight innings for Seattle. He had eight strikeouts and no walks and retired the final 17 batters he faced.
Chicago starter Gavin Floyd allowed five hits in seven scoreless innings with six strikeouts and one walk.
Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu was ejected in the ninth for arguing Juan Pierre being ruled safe while stealing second.
