Freddy Garcia out-dueled David Price and Alex Rios hit a go-ahead homer as the Chicago White Sox held on for a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays Friday.
Ramon Castro also homered and Gordon Beckham had an RBI single for the White Sox, who rebounded from Thursday’s 5-1 loss in the opener.
The White Sox have handed Price (7-2) his only two losses. They also beat him in Chicago on April 20.
The 24-year-old left-hander had won four straight starts and was seeking his American League-leading eighth win, but was upstaged by the veteran Garcia (4-3).
The 33-year-old right-hander allowed just two runs and four hits in seven innings, lowering his ERA to 5.26. Garcia, who recorded a season-high seven strikeouts and walked just two, improved to 7-3 vs. the Rays.
Rios’ two-run homer - his 10th of the season in the fourth - gave Garcia and the White Sox a 2-1 lead. Castro then belted his first home run the following frame to make it 3-1.
Evan Longoria’s two-out RBI double in the sixth cut Chicago’s lead to 3-2, but Garcia stranded him at second by getting Carlos Pena to ground out.
Beckham added an insurance run with a run-scoring single in the eighth. Matt Thornton threw the final 1 2/3 innings for his second save in three chances.
Price allowed three runs and four hits in seven innings with four strikeouts and four walks.
Reid Brignac’s RBI single in the third put Tampa ahead, 1-0.
