Juan Miranda’s bases-loaded walk forced home Brett Gardner with the winning run as the New York Yankees rallied past the Boston Red Sox 4-3 in 10 innings at Yankee Stadium Sunday night.

The victory snapped New York’s four-game losing streak and moved the Yankees to within a half-game of Tampa Bay for the American League East division lead. New York also lowered its magic number for clinching a playoff berth to one.

Granderson led off the 10th inning with a single off loser Hideki Okajima. Brett Gardner then bunted down the first base line. Boston catcher Victor Martinez fielded the bunt but his throw hit Gardner allowing him to reach first base and Granderson to move to third.

After an intentional walk to Derek Jeter to load the bases, Marcus Thames hit a sharp ground ball that was fielded by Adrian Beltre, who got the force out at home. The next better was Miranda, who took a 3-1 pitch inside to draw the walk to end the contest.

Both team’s star closers blew leads in the ninth inning. Mike Lowell’s sacrifice fly scored Bill Hall to put the Red Sox ahead 3-2 in the ninth as Boston stole four bases and rallied for two runs off Mariano Rivera. Robinson Cano’s bases-loaded single off Boston’s Jonathan Papelbon tied the game in the bottom of the inning.

Alex Rodriguez hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead.

Boston got a strong outing from starter Daisuke Matsuzaka, who pitched eight innings allowing four hits and one walk while striking out seven. But Matsuzaka surrendered a one-out single to Mark Teixeira and Rodriguez followed with his 29th homer of the season.

Phil Hughes made a surprise for New York. The Yankees had planned to skip Hughes’ turn to limit his innings, but decided that the team needed to win this game so he got the nod anyways.

Hughes lasted six-plus innings, allowing three hits and four walks while striking out four. Boone Logan (2-0) faced one batter and got the win.
