Jon Lester pitched six-plus shutout innings to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 2-1 win over the New York Yankees on Monday afternoon.
Lester (12-7) allowed four hits with three walks and six strikeouts. The Boston bullpen did the rest, capped by Jonathan Papelbon's 28th save of the season.
Boston (64-49) scored both its runs in the second inning. Ryan Kalish singled, stole second and took third on catcher Jorge Posada's throwing error. Kalish scored on an infield hit by Bill Hall.
Hall later scored what proved to be the game-winning run on a fielder's choice by J.D. Drew.
The Yankees (69-42) loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh inning, but Lester struck out Curtis Granderson and Daniel Bard came in and fanned Derek Jeter and Nick Swisher to end the threat.
Phil Hughes (13-5) allowed six hits and two runs in six innings to take the loss.
Mark Teixeira belted his 26th homer in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Yankees then put runners on first and second with one out, but Bard and Papelbon got out of the inning unscathed.
Jeter walked and stole second base with one out in the ninth inning, but Papelbon fanned both Swisher and Teixeira to end the game.
The two teams split the four-game series at the Bronx.
