Josh Beckett allowed one run over eight innings and Mike Lowell homered in his return to the lineup to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 3-1 win over the Cleveland Indians at Fenway Park Tuesday night.
Beckett allowed just three hits and a run while fanning eight. Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth for his 25th save.
Lowell belted a two-run homer on the first pitch he saw to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Lowell was activated from the disabled list before the game as the Red Sox placed Kevin Youkilis on the 15-day DL with a torn ligament in his thumb.
Youkilis could miss the remainder of the season.
Both benches cleared in the eighth inning after a pitch from Cleveland’s Jensen Lewis sailed behind Adrian Beltre’s back. Lewis was ejected and there were no punches thrown in the incident but Beckett, who hit two batters in the game, and several other players had to be separated.
Boston manager Terry Francona also got into a heated dispute with Indians coach Steve Smith during the fracas.
Lou Marson homered in the third inning for the lone Cleveland run. Bill Hall homered for Boston to cap the scoring.
