Jon Lester went the distance while David Ortiz and Adrian Beltre homered as Boston earned a 5-1 victory over San Francisco on Sunday afternoon, winning a series that saw them suffer through more injuries.
Lester (9-3) kept the Giants in check all afternoon, allowing only an RBI groundout in the first inning. He threw a five-hitter, striking out nine and walking one in his second complete game of the season.
He threw a six-hitter May 20 against Minnesota.
The Red Sox were all over two-time National League Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum (8-3), chasing him after just three innings with five hits and four earned runs. He also walked three batters and gave up Ortiz’s homer with two out in the first.
It was Lincecum’s shortest outing since the 2009 season opener, when he also went three innings against Milwaukee.
Boston pushed its lead to 3-1 in the second as Lester hit a deep shot to right for a sacrifice fly and Marco Scutaro followed with an RBI single. Bill Hall, who is starting for injured Dustin Pedroia at second base, was 2-for-4 and had an RBI single in the third. Beltre hit his 12th homer in the ninth.
Red Sox catcher Victor Martinez suffered a broken left thumb in the game and will be re-evaluated Monday.
