Tim Wakefield pitched 7 1/3 stellar innings and the visiting Boston Red Sox capitalized on some shoddy defense by Cleveland in a 3-2 victory over the Indians on Tuesday night.

Wakefield (2-4) allowed two runs and four hits while striking out six and walking just one to give the Red Sox their second win in as many nights over the Indians.

The 43-year-old knuckleballer snapped a personal two-game losing streak and also surpassed Roger Clemens for throwing the most innings (2,777) in franchise history.

Boston provided Wakefield with all the support he needed in a three-run fourth inning that was kept alive when Indians center fielder Trevor Crowe dropped a fly ball by Victor Martinez that would have ended the inning.

Kevin Youkilis and Bill Hall sandwiched RBI doubles around a run-scoring single from David Ortiz off Indians starter David Huff (2-7).

Shelly Duncan got the Indians within 3-2 with a solo home run – his first since May 23, 2008 – in the seventh but Cleveland could not get any closer.

Daniel Bard worked around a one-out walk in the ninth to record his second save of the season. Regular closer Jonathan Papelbon is on bereavement leave.
