Jon Lester combined with three relievers on a one-hit shutout to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 2-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field Tuesday night.
Lester (5-2) allowed only a fourth-inning single to Willy Aybar. He struck out nine. Manny Delcarmen, Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon all followed with one inning of hitless ball.
Boston scored both runs in the third innings. J.D. Drew got a two-out single and Kevin Youkilis followed with a walk. David Ortiz then stroked an opposite-field double that scored both runners. Ortiz has 21 RBIs in 18 games this month.
Tampa Bay has struggled to score this series, managing only seven hits and one run as they’ve dropped the first two of this three-game set.
Carl Crawford was ejected after arguing a strike call in the fifth inning with home plate umpire Bob Davidson. Crawford appeared to make contact with the umpire with the bill of his helmet in the altercation. Rays manager Joe Maddon was also ejected in the incident.
James Shields (5-2) took the loss allowing four hits and two walks in eight innings.
