Jeremy Hermida had a two-run double off Mariano Rivera in the ninth inning as the Boston Red Sox rallied past the New York Yankees 7-6 at Yankee Stadium Tuesday night.
New York had beaten Boston 14 of its last 17 meetings entering the game and looked to be in control. It had a 5-0 lead after the five innings but Kevin Youkilis homered in the sixth off starter CC Sabathia to make it 5-1.
Sabathia left after seven innings with the score still 5-1 but Boston scored four times off Joba Chamberlain in the eighth to tie the game. Youkilis had a two-run single and J.D. Drew and David Ortiz also had RBIs in the inning.
The Red Sox then scored twice in the ninth. Darnell McDonald singled off Rivera and Marco Scutaro reached when right fielder Marcus Thames dropped a shallow fly ball. Hermida followed two batters later with a two-out double to left field over the head of Randy Winn.
Jonathan Papelbon blew a two-run lead in Monday night’s loss to the Yankees, but successfully worked the ninth inning tonight for the save. He allowed an unearned run on a double by Robinson Cano that scored Alex Rodriguez, who reached on an error to start the inning. Cano advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt but was stranded there as Papelbon got Juan Miranda on a grounder back to the pitcher and then struck out Randy Winn to end the game.
Miranda homered and drove in a pair for the Yankees.
New York played the game under protest after Red Sox starter Josh Beckett was removed after giving up a two-run double to Robinson Cano to make the score 5-0. The Red Sox indicated that Beckett was injured but Yankees manager Joe Girardi said there was no notice given to allow reliever Manny Delcarmen to throw an unlimited warm-up session when he entered the game.
Beckett went 4 2/3 innings allowing five runs of which three were earned on five hits. He fanned six.
The game was delayed for over an hour at the start by rain.
