The Red Sox defeated the Yankees 9-7 Sunday night in the Major League season opener at Fenway Park in Boston.
The wild game began positively for the Yankees. Jorge Posada and Curtis Granderson hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.
The Yankees led 5-1 after four innings, but Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia began to stumble in the bottom of the fifth. An RBI single by Marco Scutaro cut the Yankees lead to 5-2. Then in the sixth, Kevin Youkilis tripled to right to score Dustin Pedroia and Victor Martinez and cut the Yankees lead to 5-4.
David Robertson relieved Sabathia and allowed an RBI single to Beltre, which tied the game at 5-5 in the sixth.
The Yankees broke the tie in the top of the seventh on a Robinson Cano ground out, and made it 7-5 on Posada (3-4, 2 RBIs) RBI single.
But the Red Sox tied it again on a two-run home run by Pedroia (2-4, 3 RBIs) off Chan Ho Park in the bottom of the seventh, and they took their first lead, 8-7, on a passed ball that allowed Youkilis (3-4, 2 RBIs) to score.
The Red Sox added a run in the eighth of Joba Chamberlain. Park (0-1) took the loss. Hideki Okajima (1-0) got the win in relief of Josh Beckett and Jonathan Papelbon got the save (1).
