Pinch-runner Jake Fox scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the Baltimore Orioles a surprising 7-6 comeback victory over the Washington Nationals.
Trailing 6-0 after four innings, the Orioles halved the deficit in the fifth and scored three times in the eighth to forge a tie. After extinguishing a threat by Washington in the top of the ninth, Baltimore completed its improbable comeback in the bottom half.
Matt Wieters drew a one-out walk from Tyler Clippard (8-4) and Scott Moore, who belted a two-run homer in the eighth as a pinch hitter, singled. Fox came on to run for Wieters and Clippard was replaced by Matt Capps, who induced a ground ball off the bat of Julio Lugo.
Shortstop Ian Desmond threw to Cristian Guzman for the forceout at second base. But Guzman made a wild throw to first in an attempt to complete an inning-ending double play, allowing Fox to cross the plate with the winning run.
Alfredo Simon (2-1) picked up the win despite allowing two hits in the top of the ninth.
Corey Patterson went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Nick Markakis also collected three hits for the Orioles, who have won consecutive games for the first time since capturing three in a row from May 12-14.
Nyjer Morgan went 4-for-5 and scored three times while Adam Dunn drove in four runs for Washington, which scored more than four runs for the first time in 10 games.
