Jeremy Guthrie pitched six strong innings to lead the Baltimore Orioles to a 5-1 victory over the visiting Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night.
Nick Markakis belted a solo home run and reached base in all four plate appearances as the Orioles snapped Oakland's three-game winning streak.
Guthrie (3-4) allowed one run on six hits in extending his winning streak to three games as he continues to dig himself out of an 0-4 start to the season.
The Orioles forged ahead in the sixth, scoring a pair of runs without benefit of a hit. Two walks, a wild pitch and sacrifice flies by Ty Wigginton and Adam Jones gave Baltimore a 3-1 lead.
Markakis’ homer and an RBI double by Matt Wieters in the eighth inning extended Baltimore’s cushion to 5-1.
Daric Barton and Gabe Gross had three hits apiece for Oakland, which dropped to 5-14 on the road this season in the opener of a 10-game road trip.
Athletics starter Dallas Braden left after four innings. He allowed one run and three hits and threw just 62 pitches. No reason was given for his departure.
Tyson Ross (1-3) took the loss in relief.
