Brad Bergesen gave up just one run in 7 2/3 innings to win his third consecutive start as the Baltimore Orioles rolled to a 5-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners Wednesday night.
Bergesen (3-2) surrendered five hits, rarely getting into trouble as Seattle couldn’t handle his effective sinker. The right-hander has now tossed 14 1/3 scoreless innings after a similar shutout performance in his last start - a 2-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins.
Alfredo Simon closed out the ninth for his fourth save.
Corey Patterson, starting his second stint with Baltimore after being called up earlier in the day, sparked a two-run rally in the third for an early 2-0 lead. He singled and later scored on a Miguel Tejada two-run double off Ryan Rowland-Smith (0-3).
Luke Scott added a solo homer in the fourth. Cesar Izturis made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly in the sixth and Adam Jones had an RBI single later in the inning.
The Mariners didn’t do much offensively until the final two innings. Chone Figgins had an RBI single in the eighth to end Bergesen’s night. Ken Griffey, Jr. gave Seattle its other run with a ninth-inning sacrifice fly.
