Cliff Lee earned his first victory for Seattle as the Mariners gave him some unexpected offensive support in a 5-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday night.
Lee (1-1) threw 77 strikes in his 112-pitch effort on a rainy night in Baltimore. The left-hander kept Baltimore (9-24) quiet throughout, scattering eight hits over 7 1/3 innings and surrendering only an RBI single to Garrett Atkins in the seventh.
Seattle (13-19) already had a 5-0 lead by that point. The Mariners got two runs off Baltimore starter David Hernandez (0-5) in the fifth and added three more in the sixth to lock up their second straight victory.
Ryan Langerhans got a leadoff home run in the fifth to make it 1-0. Chone Figgins’ bases-loaded walk later in the inning gave Seattle a 2-0 lead.
Rob Johnson and Michael Saunders both had RBI singles in the sixth and the Mariners scored another run on a Nolan Reimold error in left field. Seattle came into the game with a .228 batting average but collected 10 hits.
The Orioles have lost three in a row. They went just 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left six on base.
