Pierre-Luc Dubois scored twice, including the game-winner with 41 seconds left in overtime, as the Washington Capitals defeated the visiting Vancouver Canucks 2-1 on Wednesday.

Logan Thompson made 30 saves for the Capitals, who have alternated wins and losses over their last eight games.

Conor Garland scored for the Canucks, who have lost three straight (0-1-2) and four of six (1-2-3). Kevin Lankinen stopped 16 of 18 shots.

Dubois became a thorn in the Canucks' side early on as he was assessed a double-minor after a heated scuffle with Quinn Hughes.

Dubois scored the game's first goal with 33 seconds remaining in the opening frame. The 26-year-old gloved down a rebound to his stick and chipped a backhand shot over Lankinen's pad.

With under three minutes remaining in the middle frame, the Canucks had a flurry of chances to tie the game with a delayed penalty impending, but Thompson got in front of all of the scoring opportunities.

On the ensuing power play, the Canucks finally struck as Garland found a rebound and fired the puck into the back of the net with 37 seconds left in the period. It was his 11th goal of the season.

The Canucks were handed an early power play in the third period but couldn't take advantage.

The Capitals got their chance with 13:22 left in the third, but Jakob Chychrun was unable to find the back of the net with a pair of shots.

Alex Ovechkin had the overtime frame's first opportunity with 2:41 remaining as John Carlson fed him a pass and Ovechkin wired a one-timer, but Lankinen kicked the puck away with his pad.

Chychrun got loose on a breakaway with 2:02 left in the 3-on-3 overtime, but he was unable to slide the puck between the legs of Lankinen.

Dubois then closed out the contest as he took a pass from Aliaksei Protas and went up high over the shoulder of Lankinen. It was Dubois' seventh goal of the season and his first game with multiple goals.
