Yankees 8, Blue Jays 4 (1st): Chris Stewart hit a go-ahead three-run homer and Robinson Cano bashed his 200th career home run among four hits as New York took the opener of a day-night doubleheader from visiting Toronto.
Ivan Nova (7-4) surrendered four runs in the second inning but was sharp the rest of the afternoon, going 6 1/3 innings and scattering nine hits. Brett Gardner added a sacrifice fly for the Yankees, who completed the sweep with a 3-2 victory in the nightcap and moved within five games of Oakland for the second American League wild card spot.
Stewart came up with two on and two out in the sixth and bashed a 2-1 fastball from Neil Wagner (2-4) down the line in left to put New York on top 6-4. Cano finished a triple short of the cycle for the Yankees, who have won seven of their last nine.
The Blue Jays jumped out early with four runs in the second, opening the scoring on Maicer Izturis’ RBI single. Kevin Pillar plated a run with a groundout and Rajai Davis delivered a two-run double to right-center to cap the rally.
Cano chopped the deficit to one run in the third by sending a 1-0 fastball over the center-field wall for a three-run blast. The All-Star slugger added an RBI double in the seventh and five relievers combined to throw 2 2/3 hitless innings to seal the win.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Blue Jays RF Jose Bautista left the game in the fourth inning with left hip soreness. … Esmil Rogers started for Toronto and allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings while striking out four. … Yankees RF Ichiro Suzuki went 2-for-5 to bring his combined hit total between the major leagues and Japan to 3,999. He did not bat in the nightcap.
