Cardinals 4, Pirates 3 (14): Adron Chambers singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 14th inning as host St. Louis outlasted Pittsburgh for only its second walk-off win of the season.
Jon Jay led off the 14th with his fourth hit off Jared Hughes (2-3), stole second base and barely beat the tag of catcher Russell Martin as the Cardinals handed the Pirates their fourth straight loss. It was the first RBI of the season for Chambers and pulled St. Louis within two games of first-place Pittsburgh in the National League Central.
Sam Freeman (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning for his first major-league win as St. Louis improved to 6-13 in its last 19 games and won for the first time when trailing by at least three runs despite stranding 16 runners. The Pirates were two outs from victory when left fielder Starling Marte dropped a fly ball for a two-base error in the ninth that led to Allen Craig's tying two-out single off closer Mark Melancon.
Andrew McCutchen belted a two-run homer in the first inning and Jordy Mercer added a solo shot in the second to stake Pittsburgh to an early 3-0 lead. The Cardinals cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth on David Freese's double-play groundout with the bases loaded and Jay's RBI single.
Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright overcame the two early homers and allowed three runs on five hits over seven innings while throwing a season-high 122 pitches. Pirates right-hander Charlie Morton gave up a pair of runs on seven hits over six innings and was in line for the victory until St. Louis tied it in the ninth.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The Pirates went to a five-man infield alignment with runners at the corners and one out in the 11th and escaped the threat by turning a 6-9-3 double play. ... Cardinals LF Matt Holliday went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to a season-high 10 games. ... Pirates RF Jose Tabata was a late scratch due to flu-like symptoms and Andrew Lambo, recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Tuesday, replaced him and went 0-for-3 in his major-league debut.
