Yankees 5, Rangers 4: Eduardo Nunez tripled in the tying run in the ninth and scored the winning run on Brent Lillibridge's single as visiting New York rallied to square the four-game series at one game apiece.
Nunez's tying hit came off closer Joe Nathan (1-1), who blew only his second save in 33 chances and dropped the Rangers to 51-1 when leading after eight innings. Lillibridge followed with a single to center to atone for his error that opened the door for a four-run Texas sixth inning.
Joba Chamberlain (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth for the victory before Mariano Rivera came on to pitch a perfect ninth inning for his 32nd save of the year and 640th of his career.
New York broke through against Rangers starter Alexi Ogando in the third on back-to-back doubles by Melky Mesa and Austin Romine and Ichiro Suzuki's RBI infield single. The Yankees added a run in the fourth when Vernon Wells doubled and scored on Lillibridge's groundout, but Lillibridge committed an error at third base in the sixth to open the door for Texas' big inning.
Mitch Moreland belted a two-run homer to cap the four-run sixth for the Rangers, who lost for the fifth time in six games. Adrian Beltre and Elvis Andrus added run-scoring hits for Texas.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Suzuki's third-inning RBI single was his 2,700th major-league hit, making him the third active player to reach 2,700. Teammates Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez are the others. ... Three Texas relievers each tossed a perfect inning to help extend the bullpen's scoreless streak to 25 1/3 innings before Nathan surrendered Nunez's RBI triple. ... Rodriguez, who has yet to play this season, is planning an appeal if Major League Baseball suspends him for his his alleged ties to the former Biogenesis clinic, USA Today reported.
